PTFE Coating – Teflon / Xylan – Food Production

PTFE Coating – Teflon / Xylan – Food Production

Teflon and Xylan coatings have a long and successful history within the food processing industry. Whenever there is a requirement for a combination in performance, which includes good release, high temperature capability and safety, Teflon and Xylan coating have enabled their use in a wide variety of food preparation and packaging operations.

The benefits gained by Teflon and Xylan coatings are supported by those engineers that have gained years of experience, such benefits include:

    • Non-stick performance
    • Increased Productivity
    • Safeguards Food Purity
    • Reduced cleaning by chemicals
    • Lower maintenance costs
    • Improved production rates / yields
    • Reduced cleaning times

Teflon and Xylan industrial coatings can be used over a broad temperature range, between -270°C to +260°C. All coatings can be applied to a variety of substrates, from stainless steel to copper, including glass and ceramics. Specialist applications can also include non-metallic substrates, for flexible products. However, such coatings are limited to the temperature threshold of the substrate. As part of the coatings performance, the applied coating will prevent interaction between the substrate and the food, whilst simultaneously providing an excellent non-stick surface. Once applied, the coating system will inhibit the ability of sticky foods or biomaterials to adhere to the equipment coated with Teflon or Xylan products. Cleaning and down-time, together with a reduction in cleaning agents are achieved.

Many manufacturers in the food processing industry take advantage of properties of Teflon and Xylan coating. Some examples of the applied industrial coatings that provide for additional plant efficiency and product quality are illustrated below:

Sugar producers, coat their sugar cube moulds with Teflon and Xylan coatings because of its non-stick, easy clean, wear and temperature resistance.

Cheese manufacturers, the problematic build-up of dried cheese is eliminated due to the coating of the mixing augers. This reduces downtime of plant and reduces labour costs.

Fast food restaurants, the durable coating of both Teflon and Xylan coating reduce the cleaning costs associated with pans used for egg preparation.

Potato chip manufacturers, obtain a higher quality of uniform products together with fewer reject, by reducing the product residue by coating the cutting knives within the process. This also benefits the cleaning and maintenance costs.

Fruit companies, having to process a variety of fruits, in particular pineapple, saving the cost of replacing cast iron bearing housings with devices coated with Teflon or Xylan coating, can solve three issues:

    1. Corrosion caused by acidic juices
    2. Daily lubrication with food grade oil
    3. High replacement frequency due to longer life of housings

Teflon and Xylan industrial coatings used for these applications comply with FDA regulations governing components of coatings for direct food contact.
