12.02.2010 Pioneering performance and superior sustainability

An increase in abrasion resistance by up to 100 percent and a 50 percent increase in the scratch resistance of its premium non-stick coating system, achieved with a reduced impact on the environment, are the key features of the new generation of the DuPont™ Teflon® non-stick coatings.

Their launch is in line with findings of extensive global market research by DuPont, which indicates that consumers seek longer-lasting, more durable cookware. At the same time, the patented technology behind the new, more durable and high-performance coatings is the first in the industry to receive approval from the Dutch food contact authorities, as well as being in compliance with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements.

There are four new seals to identify the new Teflon® non-stick coatings for cookware manufacturers and consumers to choose from:

  • two-coat Teflon® Classic for easy clean and convenience,
  • three-coat Teflon® Xtra for long life, easy clean and convenience,
  • three-coat Teflon® Select for even longer life and every day durable,
  • three-coat Teflon® Platinum Plus for maximum life, scratch resistance and giving the best performance.

Across the entire portfolio, there has been a significant improvement in terms of the coatings’ durability and overall damage resistance as measured by their SBAR (Scotch Brite™ Abrasion Resistance) performance. “So, for example, the Teflon® Classic non-stick coating exhibits twice the abrasion performance of the previous comparable system, while we have increased the scratch resistance of our best Teflon® – Teflon® Platinum Plus – by a further 50 percent,” declares Phil Bardsley, Sales Manager Consumer & Industrial Finishes, Europe, Middle East & Africa at DuPont Fluoropolymer Solutions.

The new technology behind the more durable and high performance coatings is based on a more sustainable chemical formulation which offers the same outstanding non-stick release associated with the Teflon® brand and matches completely the specific requirements of many large EU retailers.

“Our Life Cycle Assessments (LCA`s) of pans coated with Teflon® indicate that the new Teflon® non-stick cookware will deliver significantly reduced environmental impacts, for instance due to their increased service-life,” continues Bardsley.

DuPont has invested resources in gaining third party acceptance of the new technology ahead of its commercial introduction. It is the first in the industry to have received authorisation for use in non stick coating for food contact applications from the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. The new Teflon® coatings are also in compliance with FDA requirements.

The development of new Teflon® is in line with the findings of extensive market research conducted in the USA, France, Italy, Germany, UK, Brazil, China and Japan. Results from this research clearly show that consumers have three principal concerns about non-stick cookware when making their purchasing decision – those of performance, safety and healthy cooking. “Our research revealed that consumers want products that look newer longer, last longer and show less scratching. Our new set of Teflon® seals now provide the universal guarantee of Teflon® across the full range of non-stick coated products,” concludes Phil Bardsley.

DuPont™ Teflon® was discovered in 1938 by DuPont chemist Dr. Roy Plunkett. The first non-stick coating was commercialized for cookware in 1962. Cookware coated with Teflon® non-stick makes cooking and clean up easier. DuPont has created a wide range of non-stick coatings to meet a variety of needs – from those who are avid cooks to those who are professional chefs. For more information, visit www.teflon.com.
