Water Resistance

water resistantPTFE has the remarkable property of being both hydrophobic (water shedding) and oleophobic (oil shedding). Water cannot readily wet out the surfaces. The water droplets behave like mercury when confronted with the coated surface. This condition is critical for specialised areas of filtration and beneficial in reducing water absorption leading to the onset of corrosion. The resistance of oils is useful to keep surfaces clean. It is also beneficial for cooking and specialised areas of lubrication. Recent developments include fibre composites and fabrics.

and hydrophobic, they are not readily wetted. Cleanup is easier and more thorough - in many cases, surfaces are self-cleaning.PTFE coating materials bond with many different surfaces at the nano-scale to create easy-clean, water and oil resistant, anti-smudge coatings.  These coatings are currently being used for eyeglasses and other surfaces such as flat panel displays, and stainless steel. Coatings create a water-repellant (hydrophobic) and oil-repellant (oleophobic) surface to repel water, dust, oil, and dirt on surfaces allowing for easy-clean glass and easy-clean metal.
